
Venus takes about 243 Earth days to turn once on its axis. It takes only about 225 Earth days to travel all the way around the Sun. Put those two numbers side by side and you get one of the strangest facts in the solar system: on Venus, the day is longer than the year.
The comparison needs a little care, because «day» can mean two things. One is the time the planet needs for a single full rotation, measured against the distant stars. That is the 243-day figure, and it is the slowest spin of any planet we know. The other is the time from one sunrise to the next, which works out to roughly 117 Earth days on Venus. Shorter than its year, but still absurdly long. Either way you slice it, a Venusian is in no hurry.
Venus also spins the wrong way. Almost everything in the solar system rotates in the same direction it orbits, a leftover from the spinning disk of gas and dust that formed the planets. Venus turns the other way, so slowly and so backward that if you could stand on its surface and see through the crushing clouds, the Sun would rise in the west and set in the east. Why it does this is still an open question. The leading guesses involve an ancient giant impact that tipped the planet over, or the thick atmosphere and the Sun’s pull grinding its spin down and into reverse across billions of years.
None of this would be pleasant to witness up close. The surface sits at around 465 degrees Celsius, hot enough to melt lead, under an atmosphere roughly ninety times heavier than Earth’s. The Soviet Venera probes that landed there in the 1970s and 1980s lasted from a few minutes to about two hours before the heat and pressure finished them off.
Still, the arithmetic is worth sitting with. Somewhere close enough to see with the naked eye on a clear evening, there is a world where you could, in principle, watch a sunrise, wait out an entire year, and still not reach the next one.
